The Best Detox Baths for Optimal Health
In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the best detox baths for optimal health, including baths for inflammation, lymphatic drainage, boosting immunity, and more. Whether you’re looking to detoxify your body, ease muscle tension, or simply relax after a long day, these natural remedies can help support your health and well-being. So, let’s dive in and discover the power of detox baths for optimal health!
What are the benefits of a detox bath?
Detox baths can do wonders for your body. They are simple, relaxing, and health-supporting in multiple ways, including you guessed it, DRAINAGE. Epsom salt is a compound of the minerals magnesium and sulfate. Magnesium is argued by many health practitioners as one of the most essential minerals for health as it’s involved with hundreds of biological processes.
Think about energy production, sleep, metabolism, muscle function, heart health, mood, and overall cellular function. While sulfates are also a key mineral for optimal well-being. Think liver health and detox, and they help form proteins in the brain and joints. Together the magnesium and the sulfate helps to flush out toxins. Because human skin is highly permeable, this compound draws out toxins through a process called reverse osmosis, which pulls salt out of your body and harmful toxins along with it.
The main benefits of detox baths:
- boosts magnesium and sulfate minerals
- supports detox
- stress reduction
- relieves aches and pains
- lowers inflammation
- improves blood sugar levels
Detox Baths for optimal health
Detox baths have been used for centuries as a natural way to promote relaxation, improve skin health, and support overall well-being. By combining powerful ingredients such as Epsom salt, baking soda, and essential oils, detox baths can help remove toxins and impurities from the body while also providing a range of health benefits. Let’s dive into how you can start adding this to your regimen to help support your overall wellness.
Detox bath for allergies or inflammation
A detox bath can help alleviate some allergy symptoms by removing toxins and irritants from the body and promoting relaxation. I’ve personally experimented a lot with this one and found this recipe to be the most beneficial. Here’s how to make a detox bath that may help with allergies or inflammation:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of Epsom salt
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 10 drops of lavender essential oil
- 5 drops of peppermint essential oil
Peppermint essential oil has natural soothing properties that can help reduce pain and discomfort associated with inflammation, as well as a natural cooling effect that can help clear congestion in the sinuses and lungs.
Detox bath for weight loss
While a detox bath alone is not likely to cause significant weight loss, certain ingredients in a detox bath can help promote weight loss by supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes, improving digestion, and reducing inflammation. Here’s a detox bath recipe that may help promote weight loss:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 10 drops grapefruit essential oil
- 5 drops peppermint essential oil
Grapefruit essential oil has been shown to have metabolism-boosting properties, which can help support weight loss efforts.
Detox bath for babies & kids
I approach detox baths for my toddler in two different ways, and oils are a central part of both! For everyday detox encouragement, I throw a couple of handfuls of Epsom Salts and Baking Soda into their bath, plus a few drops of something simple like Lavender, Sleepyize, or Seedlings Calm. This is also a great combo that can be used on infants.
When they are sick, or emotional, or my mom gut just senses something off, I draw them a full-scale detox bath. That includes:
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Epsom salt
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda per toddler-sized bath.
- ¼ to ½ cup of “Food grade” hydrogen peroxide–meaning it is 35% pure hydrogen peroxide (as opposed to 3% like the one mom used on your cuts and scrapes)–as an additive to their warm bath.
Be sure to mix the ingredients well in warm water before letting your toddler soak in the bath for 20 minutes.
Detox bath for lymphatic drainage
About 60% of the products you put on your skin will end up in your lymphatic system. Toxins, toxicity, and the removal of toxins is a tall and complicated order. It feels exhausting because it’s endless. I’m doing my best and leaning into optimizing my body’s ability to detox instead of trying to control it. Getting things flowing properly is a great start!
The hot water gets the lymph system going, kills pathogens, accelerates detox through the skin, invigorates circulation, and helps calm the nervous system.
I recommend dry brushing prior to the bath to open up your drainage pathways.
Here’s a recipe for a detox bath that can help support lymphatic drainage:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 10-15 drops of lemon essential oil
Adding a lemon essential oil has natural cleansing and purifying properties that can help support the body’s natural detoxification processes, including lymphatic drainage.
Detox bath to improve skin health & PH levels
This is a popular one that has been getting a lot of attention and for a good reason. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR! Most of us know the benefits of consuming a shot of apple cider vinegar a day on an empty stomach (hello, gut health!) but adding it to your bath is equally as helpful.
Apple cider vinegar has an acidic pH, which can help balance out the pH levels of your skin and promote healthy skin. It also has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe skin irritations such as eczema and psoriasis.
Here’s a recipe for a detox bath with apple cider vinegar that can help soothe skin irritations and balance your pH levels:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Raw, organic, unprocessed apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup Epsom salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil (optional)
Detox bath for Acute illness
Mustard seed Baths have been traditionally used for detoxification, illness, and purification. This one is absolutely perfect when to treat cure or prevent getting sick; especially after a flight. I try to do this when I get home from a trip (especially after flying). It definitely smells a little bit spicy but if you use it with essential oils, it will make it smell more like a conventional bath. It does make a bit of a mess, so I recommend wiping down your tub immediately after!
Here’s how to make a mustard seed bath detox:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of mustard seed powder
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 1/4 cup of Epsom salt
- 1/4 cup of sea salt
The sulfur compounds in mustard seed powder can help stimulate the sweat glands and promote detoxification by flushing out toxins from the body.
Detox bath to draw out toxins
This is one of my favorite bath recipes to help eliminate toxins and endure the incredible benefits of magnesium flakes and bentonite clay. It is also great for little babes (adjust the recipe if needed).
- 1 Cup Pure Magnesium Chloride Flakes
- 1 Tbsp Bentonite clay
- ½ Cup Baking Soda
Mix all ingredients into a bowl and add to the steaming water. You can also make a big jar full and add 1 cup to your bath. This is what I do because I take this particular type of detox bath often.
Detox bath to replenish minerals and relaxation
These days, over-farming, chemical fertilizers and the stripping of nutrients to make processed foods means that food – even fresh fruits and vegetables — is no longer what it used to be. The result is a big decline in essential minerals. With too many people already suffering from mineral deficiencies and blocked detoxification pathways, we could use all the help we can get.
Here’s a recipe for a detox bath that can help replenish minerals:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Himalayan pink salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil
Himalayan pink salt contains over 80 essential minerals that can be absorbed by the body through the skin, helping to replenish minerals that may be depleted due to stress, exercise, or other factors.
Lavender essential oil is widely known for its natural relaxing properties and ability to reduce stress.
Detox bath for autism
Many children on the autism spectrum are unable to detox heavy metal toxins in their bodies. Epsom Salts play a big role in helping children with autism. The salts are composed of magnesium and sulfate, and often both of these are low in children on the autistic spectrum.
Research by Dr. Rosemary Waring shows that a lack of sulfate may be a primary problem in many autistic children. Similar sulfate deficiencies have been reported in people with migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, jaundice, and other allergic conditions.
You can simply do an Epsom salt bath using 1-2 Cups and allow your child to soak in it for approximately 20 minutes. I would recommend 3x a week. You also want to make sure you are using good-quality Epsom salts. Lower grades often use harmful chemicals and heavy metals in the production process and should be avoided.
You can also do the “detox bath to draw out toxins “mentioned above that uses bentonite clay. Bentonite clay detox is an alternative way to remove toxins from the body and can be especially beneficial for children with autism.
Detox bath to boost immunity
A detox bath can help boost your immune system by removing toxins and promoting relaxation. Here’s how to make a detox bath that may help improve immunity:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of Epsom salt
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- 10 drops of tea tree essential oil
- 5 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
Tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils have natural antimicrobial properties that can help boost your immune system and fight off infections.
Detox bath to help with digestion
Whenever I feel a little backed up or my gut just isn’t feeling great, I always fall back on this combo. I like to soak in this for a solid 30 minutes and for me, it gets things moving.
Here’s a recipe for a detox bath that can help with digestion:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Epsom salt
- 1/2 cup raw apple cider vinegar
- 10-15 drops of ginger essential oil
Ginger essential oil has natural soothing properties that can help reduce inflammation and discomfort in the digestive system, as well as stimulate the digestive process.
How long should you stay in a detox bath?
The best detox bath soak is all about the time. 45 minutes is ideal. For the first 20 minutes, your body is detoxing, and for the last 20 minutes, it is absorbing the minerals from them!
For some staying in a bath that long can seem difficult. I have to set a timer and keep my water with minerals added handy! I can put on healing music, a podcast, or read a book. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t stay in that long. You can still reap some good benefits with 30 minutes.
How do you know if a detox bath is working?
There are some clear signs to look out for after taking your detox bath. Your body will speak to you, here are some things to look out for:
- Increased sweating
- Feeling relaxed
- Improved skin condition
- Improved digestion
- Feeling more energized
It’s important to note that not everyone will experience the same effects from a detox bath, and some people may not notice any significant changes. However, if you experience any of the above signs, the bath is likely helping to support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
Are there risks and side effects to a detox bath?
Detox baths are rather safe but there are some signs to look out for. Dehydration is the biggest one, which is why in the section below I recommend drinking lots of fluids! Preferably coconut water or water with Celtic Sea salt to replenish minerals.
Depending on your skin type, some people may be sensitive to some of the oils, and it can cause your skin to feel irritated. It’s always best to do a test patch of the oil if you are unsure.
Dizziness or lightheadedness is another common symptom. Prolonged exposure to hot water can cause this, particularly in people with low blood pressure. It’s important to avoid staying in the bath for too long if you start to experience this.
Some helpful tips while taking a detox bath
Remember to drink lots of filtered water before and after, the extra water will support and improve the detox process. During my bath, I like to sip on some coconut water for electrolytes and hydration.
Feel free to take a binder before and after as well. A binder can help absorb toxins that are released during the detox process. During a detox bath, the body is stimulated to release toxins through the skin and other channels of elimination. However, if these toxins are not properly eliminated, they can circulate in the body and cause further harm. This is where binders can be helpful, as they can bind to toxins and help eliminate them from the body.
Common binders include activated charcoal, bentonite clay, chlorella, and zeolite. These can be taken orally in capsule or powder form before a detox bath or added directly to the bathwater. It’s important to follow the recommended dosage for the specific binder being used and to drink plenty of water to aid in the elimination of toxins.
Epsom salts baths can make you tired, so I recommend doing them before bed just in case.
I recommend taking a cold shower immediately following your detox bath. Detox baths can help to open the pores and release toxins, but it’s important to seal the pores afterward to prevent the reabsorption of the released toxins. Cold water can help to constrict the pores and prevent reabsorption of toxins.
It is imperative that you pick a pharmaceutical grade Epsom Salt. On the package, under Active Ingredients you want it to say “Magnesium Sulfate USP (Epsom Salt)” … and below, it states: “USP = Highest Quality Pharmaceutical Grade.” I recommend THIS ONE HERE.
To summarize
While each type of detox bath has its unique benefits, it’s important to remember that everyone’s body is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. So don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of detox baths to find the one that works best for you.
Remember to stay hydrated before, during, and after your detox bath, and to listen to your body if you experience any discomfort or adverse reactions. With a little experimentation and some self-care, you can enjoy the many benefits of detox baths and support your body’s natural detoxification processes for optimal health.
